Concept

The gat is more than just a hat that shields one from the sun. It embodies the spirit of the scholar, who always maintains composure and treats others with respect and dignity.

Among various traditional hats, the Heungnip (黑笠), a black hat worn by adult men during the Joseon Dynasty, stands as one of the most iconic symbols of Korean culture. Its elegant silhouette and restrained color reflect the noble character and modest grace of the Confucian scholar.

In Korean tradition, hats and shoes were considered as essential as garments themselves. Choosing the appropriate hat and shoes for one’s status, time, and occasion not only completed the aesthetic harmony of one’s attire but also expressed the wearer’s dignity, refinement, and social standing.
