Relic
Nam Gye-u (1811-1888), the fifth-generation descendant of Nam Gu-man, a chief state councilor of Joseon during the late 17th century, was regarded as the best painter of butterflies in Korea. His butterfly paintings are realistically expressed. He also painted landscapes, albeit rarely. These works by Nam Gye-u contain handwritten statements about butterflies at the top and paintings of butterflies in the middle, as well as peony and wisteria flowers.
