Concept

Irworobong-do, the Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks, was a symbol of royal authority in the Joseon Dynasty. The red sun and white moon represent the king and queen, respectively, and also reflect the harmony of yin and yang.

The five peaks stretching across the painting symbolize 五行 (the Five Elements) and 五福 (the Five Blessings). The sky, earth, and water represent 天地—the universe itself.

Irworobong-do embodies the king’s authority as one who governs all under heaven. It praises royal virtue and carries wishes for national prosperity, royal flourishing, and continued blessings.
