Concept
Ilwolobongdo, the Sun, Moon, and Five Peaks, was a royal court painting that symbolized the authority and dignity of the king. As a well-known artifact, it held an important place in palace ceremonies of the Joseon Dynasty and represented the monarch’s presence.
The red sun and white moon symbolized the king and queen, reflecting the harmony of yin and yang. The five peaks stretching across the painting represented the Five Elements (五行) and the Five Blessings (五福), while the sky, earth, and water symbolized the universe itself (天地). Ilwolobongdo embodied the king’s role as the ruler of all under heaven, celebrating royal virtue and carrying wishes for national prosperity, royal flourishing, and lasting blessings.
