Concept

These products were developed in conjunction with the special exhibition commemorating the first anniversary of the bequest by the estate of the late Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee in 2022. They draw inspiration from the captivating forms of the white porcelain adorned with cobalt-blue underglaze showcased in the exhibition, with detailed cobalt-blue renderings of motifs found on artifacts from the museum collection.

The rich blue pigment used for adorning white porcelain has long been considered a noble hue and the pigment was historically difficult to obtain. In painting, the blue derived from lapis lazuli - a rare mineral more precious than gold - was traditionally reserved for only the most esteemed subjects. In the same spirit, this product was designed as a meaningful gift for someone truly special.

Features

Approximately ten centimeters in diameter, these small dishes are ideal for serving confections or light snacks. Combining the playful charm of a petite ceramic form with a clean, modern aesthetic, they were designed to appeal to the tastes of young consumers who favor simplicity and minimalism.

The designs on the products draw from celebrated items presented in the exhibition, including the beautiful peony and chrysanthemum motifs and the landscape painting Autumn Moon over Lake Dongting (capturing the scenery surrounding Lake Dongting in China) depicted on White Porcelain Bottle with Orchid and Chrysanthemum Design, White Porcelain Water Dropper with Openwork and Peony Design, and White Porcelain Vase with Landscape Design. They add a refined touch to the contemporary form of the dishes.
