Concept

Majestic and dignified, the gat embodies the noble spirit of the Korean scholar. When you think of a gat, you may picture scholars in historical dramas or actors wearing various styles of gat. These images reflect a long-standing devotion to elegance and style in Korean culture.

The most familiar gat today is the heukrip (흑립), literally “black gat,” which became widely used in the late Joseon Dynasty. Before this, the chorip (초립), woven from bamboo, was common. At one time, wide-brimmed heukrip were so large that people had to sit diagonally across a room to fit side by side. By King Jeongjo’s reign, the gat had reached a standard, moderate size.

The strap used to tie the gat—gatkkeun—was not only functional but decorative. Made from fabric, amber, coral, crystal, or other materials, it reflected social status and personal taste. In summer, silk cords absorbed sweat, so bead-made straps were preferred.
